چکیده

There is a big demand for books on medical ultrasonography in clinical practice. This is due to the fact that ultrasonography is a rapid and reliable method to diagnose a medical condition, even in general practice or emergency settings. In experienced hands, it has a high diagnostic accuracy and may be faster than other imaging techniques. Moreover, ultrasonography or echography is largely available even in countries with average levels of healthcare provision. Thus, more and more medical doctors are interested to learn and practice ultrasonography. In countries where this method is in the hands of all physicians trained and certified for ultrasonography, unlike in countries where ultrasonography is a dominion of radiologists, more and more medical doctors take up training in ultrasonography. Therefore they need textbooks. Professor Badea is an outstanding ultrasonographer of this country and author of many scientific and educational papers on ultrasonography. This book represents the most recent outcome of his editorial activity. For this enterprise he associated two experienced ultrasonographic explorers, Monica Platon Lupsor and Lidia Ciobanu, but also a group of other specialists who contributed with chapters on their fields of expertise. The volume is conceived as a textbook to be used for beginners and also by experiences investigators. It is structured according to the logic of a scholar book, but the presentation of each chapter has an increasing level of complexity, which trained readers can access. The first chapter is dedicated to the definition of ultrasonography and also the principles of the ultrasonographic investigative technique. The second chapter is dedicated to the explanation of the semiology and terminology of ultrasonography. This part also introduces standards of quality in echographic imaging. The third chapter is the most comprehensive and largely presents the ultrasonographic exploration of the abdomen and the pelvis. After the exhaustive description of abdominal ultrasonography, follows a pictorial by the main author, edited as a distinct chapter. To improve the understanding, the book continues with a dictionary of the terms and notions used in ultrasonography. The largest part of this book is dedicated to case presentations in abdominal and pelvic ultrasonography. Many cases of every abdominal organ are presented in a simple and intelligible style. An alphabetic index and pertinent references are including at the end. The most impressive feature of this editorial event is represented by the high quality pictures from the authors’ own collections, all published in excellent typographic conditions. The book will represent a new landmark in the editorial activity in the field of ultrasonography.

Noninvasive assessment of liver steatosis using ultrasound methods.

Hepatic steatosis is a condition frequently encountered in clinical practice, with potential progression towards chirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Ultrasonography (US) is one of the noninvasive imaging techniques used in the diagnosis of steatosis. We will review the US diagnostic criteria, the US performance in the diagnosis and grading of hepatic steatosis, the US steatosis models, but...

Fractal Analysis of Elastographic Images for Automatic Detection of Diffuse Diseases of Salivary Glands: Preliminary Results

The geometry of some medical images of tissues, obtained by elastography and ultrasonography, is characterized in terms of complexity parameters such as the fractal dimension (FD). It is well known that in any image there are very subtle details that are not easily detectable by the human eye. However, in many cases like medical imaging diagnosis, these details are very important since they mig...

Abdominal Tumor Characterization and Recognition Using Superior-Order Cooccurrence Matrices, Based on Ultrasound Images

The noninvasive diagnosis of the malignant tumors is an important issue in research nowadays. Our purpose is to elaborate computerized, texture-based methods for performing computer-aided characterization and automatic diagnosis of these tumors, using only the information from ultrasound images. In this paper, we considered some of the most frequent abdominal malignant tumors: the hepatocellula...
